This print was made from a scan of Ilford HP5 120 film. The image was opened in Photoshop 6. It was a square negative, but I liked the "panoramic" crop. The first stage was applying a new adjustment layer using a Multiply blending mode. This increased density without affecting contrast. I then converted it from Grayscale to Duotone mode and chose Tritones. I used the Photoshop color picker and started with black and the first color and two medium, cool grays as the next two. I adjusted the curves in each ink and eyeballed the tonality and density. The print was made with an Epson 2000P printer.
THE DIGITAL DARKROOM
The digital darkroom offers black and white printers newfound freedom in expression, paper surfaces and options in image interpretation. Having worked for many years as a custom black and white printer I was intrigued by the newfound possibilities of the digital desktop medium. I have always felt that an artist should always seek new forms of expression and work with the tools and techniques of his or her age.
All the classic darkroom controls for selective contrast and density control are easily accomplished. Add to this the ability to selectively control very defined areas of an image and to emulate and explore past printing techniques and you have a very exciting tool for visual expression.
Most of the images I produce are done via the Duotones mode, where I mix ink and ink distribution via the ink curves to play with the image color and design. This results in images that emulate classic toning and "alternative processes." I have always admired prints made with processes such as cyanotype, Van Dyke Brown and platinum/palladium, and have experimented with them all. Digital printing is another form of print making that has its own voice, rhythm and moods.
I do not seek to replace the silver print, but to explore new ways to express my vision. I source from all manner of images, including color slides, black and white slides and negatives and even prints. The greater stability of current inks and the availability of a very wide variety of paper surfaces only adds to the fun.
The main reason for this Web site is to share my digital printing explorations. I also teach, sell prints and have written a book or two on this and other photo/imaging subjects. Please see the information page and links page for information on books, workshops, print purchases, related articles and more.
